I arrived in Lisbon last night. The city is a striking contrast to the quieter environments I have been in up to now. It is noisy, vibrant, hot, hilly. Aveiro was very flat and, after a long coach journey into Lisbon, I had some trouble negotiating the very steep road to my accommodation while dragging up my not inconsiderable amount of luggage!
My most immediate task now I am here is to organise with Alcina Lo', the national co-ordinator of SICAD (General Directorate for Intervention on Additive Behaviour and Dependencies) and EMPECO (Strategic Planning and Operational Co-ordination), my access to specific data in their central database, which holds all the statistical information about the work of the CDTs and all the other centres and operations which constitute the network of the country-wide drugs strategy. Alcina has been a tremendous help to getting me access to visit the CDTs - the statistical data will be another fundamental input to my understanding of the working of the strategy.
