I spent the morning of 3 September with Fernanda Simões, Clinical Psychologist, and Fatima Peixoto, Social Worker at the Centre of Integrated Responses (CRI) of Aveiro.
The Centres of Integrated Responses are a network of local services which provide medical, psychological and social support to people with problems of addiction to both illegal (e.g. cocaine, heroin, ecstasy) or legal (e.g. alcohol and tobacco) substances.
As well as with the CDTs, they work with the Institute of Drug and Drug Dependency and the National Co-ordination centre for HIV/Aids. They provide both group and individual therapy and care, as well as effecting a 'quick test' for HIV (called Klotho) which allows early identification and helps prevent further infection. These centres can also dispense anti-retroviral medications to people who have difficulties in managing their own medical regime.
Fernanda and Fatima provided a fascinating insight and thought provoking ways of looking at and dealing with the issue of addiction. They were very gracious hosts and showed real commitment to and conviction in their work.
